Kissimmee, the Osceola County seat just south of Orlando in central Florida's flat lake country, has a tornado history that runs from brief summer spin-ups during the wet season to violent storms arriving with cool-season systems.
On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado swept across the central Florida peninsula on a 135.8-mile track, killing 11 people and injuring 530; an F2 carved its own long path through the region that same day. Decades later, on February 23, 1998, an F3 tornado tore a 28-mile path roughly 250 yards wide, killing 25 and injuring 150, while a second F3 that night killed 3 and injured 70 along an 18-mile track.
The cool months have produced other destructive strikes. On December 27, 1997, an F2 injured 18 people along a 5.8-mile path, and an F3 moved through the area on March 19, 1981. Late spring has brought danger too: a deadly F2 on May 8, 1979, injured 40 people along a 4-mile path.
Recent years continue the pattern. An EF2 tracked 6.22 miles through the area on June 25, 2012, an EF1 touched down on October 9, 2024, and an EF0 was confirmed on May 26, 2025.
