Keystone sits among the lakes of northwestern Hillsborough County, on the inland side of the Tampa Bay area. Through the warm months, sea-breeze thunderstorms and passing tropical systems tend to spin up brief, weak tornadoes here, while the area's more destructive tornadoes have generally arrived with spring storm systems and fall and winter fronts.
On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado killed 11 people and injured 530 along a 135.8-mile path up to 300 yards wide, and property damage reached $27,500,000. On May 4, 1978, an F3 killed three people and injured 94 over a compact 1.5-mile track. Tornadoes swept the area again on October 3, 1992, when an F3 killed three people and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path as much as 500 yards wide, and an F2 that same day took one life.
The cool-season threat has persisted into recent years. A series of EF1 tornadoes touched down on November 2, 2018; on December 16, 2020, an EF2 tracked 13.11 miles and caused $16,000,000 in damage; and on October 12, 2023, an EF2 carved a 4.97-mile path. The summer pattern continues as well, with an EF1 confirmed on June 25, 2025 and an EF0 on September 25, 2025.
