About Tornadoes in Kendall West

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Kendall West lies at the western edge of Miami-Dade County, where Miami's suburbs give way to the Everglades, and its tornado history follows South Florida's dual rhythm: tornadoes here have arrived both in the summer wet season, from June through September, and on cool-season days when fronts sweep across the peninsula.

Two F3 tornadoes mark the area's mid-century history. On April 10, 1956, an F3 tore a 7.8-mile path roughly 200 yards wide and injured 20 people; on June 18, 1959, another F3 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77.

The cool season has brought serious tornadoes as well. An F2 injured 21 people along a 5.7-mile path on February 19, 1968, and on February 3, 1998, an F2 held together for 21 miles. A deadly F2 struck on March 27, 2003, killing one person and injuring 14 along a six-mile track that widened to 600 yards.

The wet season has produced damaging events of its own: an F1 injured 12 people along an eight-mile path on May 12, 1997, and two EF1 tornadoes touched down on September 10, 2017. Activity continues into the present day — on October 9, 2024, an EF1 moved through the area, a reminder that this corner of South Florida sees tornado threats in nearly every season.
