About Tornadoes in Kendall

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Kendall sprawls across the flat coastal plain of Miami-Dade County southwest of downtown Miami, where sea-breeze collisions, winter fronts, and tropical systems can each spin up tornadoes.

The area's history includes some intense strikes. On April 10, 1956, an F3 tornado tracked 7.8 miles through the area, injuring 20 people and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. On June 18, 1959, another F3 carved a 12.7-mile path up to 333 yards wide and injured 77 people.

Cool-season storms have hit hard here as well. An F2 struck on February 19, 1968, injuring 21 people, and another F2 tore a 7.6-mile path through the area on December 20, 1973. On February 3, 1998, an F2 tracked 21 miles across the region, and on March 27, 2003, an F2 up to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14.

More recent tornadoes have generally been weaker. EF1s touched down on September 10, 2017, on September 27, 2022, and as recently as October 9, 2024. Kendall's tornado dates cluster in the June-through-October wet and hurricane season, though the February, December, and March strikes above show that South Florida's cool season carries real tornado risk of its own.
