About Tornadoes in Jacksonville

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Jacksonville's tornadoes are creatures of Florida's long warm season, spun up by sea-breeze thunderstorms over Duval County and by tropical systems moving along the Atlantic coast. Early September 2004 fit that rhythm: tornadoes touched down on September 5, 6, and 7, with more following on September 26.

Stronger tornadoes have struck as well. On June 8, 1957, an F2 tore a 6.4-mile path through the Jacksonville area. On May 12, 1974, an F2 tracked 17.5 miles and injured one person, while a second F2 that same day injured two along a 4.3-mile path; each caused $275,000 in property damage. Decades later, on March 29, 2001, an F2 carved a 12-mile track roughly 150 yards wide, and on August 12, 2004, another F2 stayed on the ground for 7 miles.

Even weak tornadoes here can turn deadly. An F0 on June 11, 2001 killed one person despite a path just 0.1 miles long and 10 yards wide. Nor is the cool season immune: twin EF1 tornadoes struck on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020, and an EF1 and an EF0 touched down on February 4, 2024. More recently, an EF1 hit on June 28, 2024, followed by an EF0 on May 29, 2025.
