Ives Estates lies in northeastern Miami-Dade County, near the Broward County line and only a few miles from the Atlantic — a corner of South Florida where tornadoes have spun up from winter and spring squall lines, summer sea-breeze thunderstorms, and tropical systems passing through in the fall.
Among the area's notable historical events, an F3 tornado struck on March 2, 1980, tearing a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. An F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, while an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile path of its own. On March 27, 2003, an F2 grew to 600 yards wide, killing one person and injuring 14.
The EF-scale era has brought damaging storms as well. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in property damage along a 1.11-mile path. Tornadoes rated EF0 and EF1 touched down on September 27, 2022, with another EF0 following on September 28, and EF0 tornadoes returned on February 18, 2024. A tornado also moved through the area on October 9, 2024.
