Iona occupies the low peninsula in southwestern Lee County, Florida, where the Caloosahatchee River meets the Gulf just below Fort Myers, and its tornado history leans heavily on the state's warm, stormy half of the year. On August 9, 1986, an F2 tornado tore a 1.5-mile path as much as 200 yards wide through the area, injuring 12 people and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. Decades earlier, on October 31, 1960, an F2 killed one person along a short, narrow track, and on November 11, 1968, a long-tracked F2 ran 65.4 miles across the region, injuring 3.

The cool season has brought damaging days of its own. On January 9, 2016, an EF2 carved a 3.35-mile path through the area, injuring 3 people and doing $2,000,000 in damage, and on January 16, 2022, another EF2 tracked 7.01 miles at up to 125 yards wide, causing $10,000,000 in property damage. More recently, October 9, 2024 produced a burst of tornadoes around Iona, including an EF2 that traveled 16.29 miles with a width of 500 yards and caused $500,000 in damage, along with EF0 and EF1 touchdowns the same day.
