Immokalee, an agricultural town in inland Collier County, has a tornado history shaped by both sides of southwest Florida's weather: warm-season thunderstorms and the strong cool-season systems that sweep across the peninsula.
The cool season has produced deadly tornadoes here. On November 9, 1968, an F2 tornado tracked 45.6 miles through the area, killing two people and injuring 17. Just two days later, on November 11, 1968, a second F2 carved a 65.4-mile path and injured three more.
Summer has brought destructive tornadoes as well. An F2 on June 18, 1972, caused $275,000 in property damage along a half-mile path, and exactly ten years later, on June 18, 1982, another F2 killed one person and injured four along an eight-mile track.
Activity has continued in the modern era. EF0 tornadoes touched down on September 26, 2024, and on October 9, 2024, EF1 tornadoes crossed the Immokalee area during an active autumn stretch — a reminder that fall, as much as summer, brings tornado weather to this corner of inland Florida.
