Homestead occupies the flat farm country of southern Miami-Dade County, between Biscayne Bay and the edge of the Everglades, and its tornadoes tend to arrive with early-summer sea-breeze storms, the tropical systems of hurricane season, and the occasional potent winter front.
An F3 tornado struck on June 18, 1959, carving a 12.7-mile path up to 333 yards wide, injuring 77 people and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. Cool-season systems have hit hard as well: an F2 tornado on December 20, 1973 ran 7.6 miles through the area and injured 9 people, an F1 on January 3, 1996 injured 9 along a 7-mile track, and an F2 on November 4, 1998 injured 20 along a 12-mile path. In between, an F1 on May 12, 1997 injured 12 people over an 8-mile course.
In more recent years, EF1 tornadoes touched down on June 2, 2007, on May 25, 2020, and on October 9, 2024, the last in the thick of the fall tropical season. EF0 tornadoes spun up on September 27, 2022, and again on May 25, 2023, brief touchdowns of the sort that South Florida's sea-breeze collisions and passing tropical weather regularly produce over this corner of the peninsula.
