About Tornadoes in Hollywood

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Hollywood lies along Broward County's Atlantic shore between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and tornadoes have struck the area in both of South Florida's stormy stretches — the late-winter and spring frontal season, and the long summer-and-fall wet season.

The frontal season has left deep marks here. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado tore a 7.8-mile path as wide as 500 yards, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile track that spread to 600 yards wide, and on February 3, 1998, an F2 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Spring brought an F3 on April 10, 1956, which injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile path and caused $2.75 million in property damage.

The wet season has produced damaging tornadoes of its own. An F3 on June 18, 1959, injured 77 people over a 12.7-mile track. In the modern era, an EF2 on October 19, 2011, did $4 million in property damage on a short path through the area, and an EF2 on September 28, 2022, injured two people along a nearly seven-mile path — part of a cluster of tornadoes that swept the area on September 27 and 28 that year.
