About Tornadoes in Hialeah Gardens

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Hialeah Gardens occupies flat ground in northwest Miami-Dade County, where the urban grid gives way to the Everglades — terrain where tornadoes spin up quickly out of sea-breeze thunderstorms, tropical systems, and passing cold fronts. Many of the area's tornadoes have been brief, weak wet-season spin-ups, but some of the more destructive ones have arrived with winter and early-spring frontal storms.

A destructive F3 struck on March 2, 1980, carving a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide; it killed one person, injured 33, and caused $27.5 million in property damage. An earlier F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles through the area and injured 77 people. On March 27, 2003, an F2 up to 600 yards wide ran six miles, killing one person and injuring 14, and a long-tracked F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles.

Cold-season tornadoes are nothing new here: an F2 on December 20, 1973 injured nine people. In more recent years, an EF2 on October 19, 2011 did $4 million in damage along a 1.11-mile path, an EF1 touched down on September 27, 2022, and additional tornadoes were reported on February 18 and October 9, 2024 — a reminder that around Hialeah Gardens, tornado weather can arrive in any season.
