Hialeah sits in the flat, densely built urban core of Miami-Dade County, where tornadoes tend to spin up quickly — from sea-breeze thunderstorms in the summer wet season, from squall lines ahead of cool-season fronts, and from tropical weather moving through in the fall.
Strong tornadoes have struck in both halves of the year. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado carved a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Earlier F3s hit the area as well: a tornado on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and one on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along its own 7.8-mile path.
Cool-season systems have also turned destructive here. An F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles, and on March 27, 2003 an F2 as wide as 600 yards killed one person and injured 14 along a 6-mile track through the metro area.
In more recent years, an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in property damage along a 1.11-mile path, an EF1 touched down on September 27, 2022, and brief touchdowns have continued, including an EF0 on January 6, 2024.
