About Tornadoes in Hallandale Beach

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Hallandale Beach occupies a narrow strip of Broward County's Atlantic shoreline between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and the tornadoes that have crossed this corner of South Florida have arrived in two distinct stretches of the year: the summer thunderstorm months and the cooler window from midwinter into early spring.

That cool-season window has brought intense strikes. An F3 tornado struck on March 2, 1980, carving a 7.8-mile path as wide as 500 yards, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Earlier, an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile track of its own. On February 3, 1998, an F2 traveled 21 miles through the area, and on March 27, 2003, an F2 up to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14. Summer has produced dangerous tornadoes as well: an F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people.

Recent activity has kept to the same rhythm. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 did $4 million in damage along a 1.11-mile path, EF1 tornadoes touched down on February 16, 2016 and September 27, 2022, and EF0 tornadoes were recorded near the city as recently as February 18, 2024.
