Greater Northdale lies in Hillsborough County on Florida's west-central Gulf coast, just north of Tampa, and its tornado history reflects two distinct regimes: brief touchdowns from summer thunderstorms, and stronger twisters spun up by cool-season fronts and tropical systems moving in off the Gulf.
The area has seen genuinely violent days. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado tore a 135.8-mile path roughly 300 yards wide, killing 11 people, injuring 530, and causing $27.5 million in property damage; an F2 tracked 123.3 miles across the region that same day. On October 3, 1992, several tornadoes struck in a single outbreak, among them an F3 that killed three people and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path 500 yards wide, with $27.5 million in damage. A deadly F3 on May 4, 1978, killed three more and injured 94.
Cool-season tornadoes remain a recurring hazard here. An F2 on December 25, 2006, injured two people, and on December 16, 2020, an EF2 tracked 13.11 miles through the area, causing $16 million in property damage. On October 12, 2023, an EF2 ran 4.97 miles and did $500,000 in damage. Activity has continued since: an EF1 touched down on June 25, 2025, followed by EF0 tornadoes on August 8 and September 25 of that year — reminders that around Greater Northdale, tornado season effectively runs year-round.
