About Tornadoes in Golden Glades

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Golden Glades, the unincorporated crossroads community in northern Miami-Dade County where I-95, the Palmetto Expressway, and Florida's Turnpike converge, lies in a part of South Florida where tornadoes arrive in two distinct seasons: with the squall lines of late winter and early spring, and with the daily thunderstorms and tropical weather of the summer wet season.

The cool-season storms have produced some of the area's harshest tornadoes. An F3 struck on March 2, 1980, carving a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On February 19, 1968, an F2 tracked 5.7 miles and injured 21 people; on February 3, 1998, an F2 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. On March 27, 2003, an F2 as much as 600 yards wide crossed 6 miles of the area, killing one person and injuring 14.

Warm-season tornadoes have hit hard as well. An F3 on June 18, 1959, ran 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and an F3 on April 10, 1956, injured 20 along a 7.8-mile track. In more recent years, an EF2 on October 19, 2011, cut a short but destructive 1.11-mile path that caused $4 million in property damage, several tornadoes touched down in a single day on February 16, 2016, and tornadoes returned again on February 18, 2024.
