Golden Gate sits just inland from Naples in Collier County, in a stretch of Southwest Florida where tornadoes typically arrive as brief, weak touchdowns from summer sea-breeze storms and passing tropical systems.
A grim period came in November 1968. On November 9, 1968, an F2 tornado tracked 45.6 miles with a damage path as much as 100 yards across, killing two people and injuring 17; property damage was listed at $27,500. An F1 touched down in the area the same day. Then, on November 11, 1968, another F2 followed a long, threadlike track, running 65.4 miles at widths near 17 yards, injuring three people and causing $275,000 in damage. Earlier that decade, an F2 on May 10, 1962 injured one person along a 0.3-mile path.
Recent decades fit the region's wet-season rhythm. EF0 tornadoes touched down in a burst on June 23 and 24, 2012, and September tropical moisture produced EF0 touchdowns in 2007, 2015, and again on September 26, 2024.
