Glenvar Heights sits inland in Miami-Dade County, a few miles southwest of downtown Miami, and its tornado history follows the rhythms of South Florida weather: sea-breeze thunderstorms in early summer, tropical rainbands in September and October, and potent squall lines in the cooler months.
The area has seen genuinely destructive tornadoes. On April 10, 1956, an F3 carved a 7.8-mile path up to 200 yards wide and injured 20 people. On June 18, 1959, an F3 tracked 12.7 miles, injuring 77 people. Cool-season systems have struck hard as well: an F2 on December 20, 1973, injured nine people along a 7.6-mile path; an F2 on February 3, 1998, stayed on the ground for 21 miles; and on March 27, 2003, an F2 that grew to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile track.
Hurricane season leaves its own signature. EF1 tornadoes touched down on September 10, 2017; a cluster of tornadoes, one rated EF1, struck on September 27, 2022; and an EF1 touched down on October 9, 2024.
