Fruit Cove sits in northern St. Johns County, on the east bank of the St. Johns River just south of Jacksonville, and its tornado history reflects northeast Florida's two distinct storm seasons.

The cool months have produced significant tornadoes here. An F3 struck on February 7, 1971, carving a 13.1-mile path up to 200 yards wide and causing $275,000 in property damage. On February 2, 1996, an F0 proved deadly along a 6.5-mile track, killing one person, while an F2 ran six miles that same day. More recently, EF1 tornadoes touched down on December 24, 2020, and again on February 4, 2024.

Warm-season storms have hit hard as well. F2 tornadoes raked the area on June 8, 1957, one of them running 6.4 miles. On May 12, 1974, an F2 traveled 17.5 miles and injured one person, while another F2 that day injured two. An F0 on June 11, 2001, killed one person despite a path of only 0.1 miles. The tropical weeks of September 2004 brought repeated touchdowns on September 5, 6, and 7, and again on September 26 and 27.
