Four Corners takes its name from the point where Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Polk counties meet, southwest of Orlando in the interior of the Florida peninsula, and its tornado history splits along the calendar. The deadly, long-track tornadoes in its past have come with winter and early-spring storm systems. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado carved a 135.8-mile path some 300 yards wide across the central peninsula, killing 11 people and injuring 530; an F2 tracked 123.3 miles that same day. On February 23, 1998, two F3 tornadoes swept the area — one killed 25 people and injured 150 along a 28-mile track, while the other killed 3 and injured 70 on an 18-mile path. Spring has brought disasters of its own: a deadly F2 on May 8, 1979 killed one person, injured 40, and caused $27,500,000 in property damage.
Summer tells a different story. Sea-breeze thunderstorms in June and July have repeatedly produced brief, weak tornadoes across the four-county area, though stronger exceptions occur: an EF2 on June 25, 2012 tracked 6.22 miles and caused $390,000 in damage, and another EF2 touched down on September 10, 2017. In the current decade, EF1 tornadoes struck on June 6, 2020 and December 16, 2020, and EF0s followed on June 6, 2024 and September 26, 2024.
