Fountainebleau sits on the flat coastal plain of western Miami-Dade County, between downtown Miami and the edge of the Everglades, where sea-breeze storms and passing tropical systems can both spin up tornadoes. Activity here clusters in the warm months, and some of the area's fiercest tornadoes date to that season decades ago. On April 10, 1956, an F3 tornado carved a 7.8-mile path roughly 200 yards wide, injuring 20 people and causing $2.75 million in damage. On June 18, 1959, another F3 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77.
The cool season brings danger too. An F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21 people along a 5.7-mile track, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. On March 27, 2003, an F2 tornado killed one person and injured 14 along a 6-mile path that widened to 600 yards.
Recent years have added their own entries. On October 19, 2011, an EF2 caused $4 million in damage along a track just over a mile long. A flurry of tornadoes touched down on September 27, 2022, among them an EF1, and an EF1 struck on October 9, 2024 — reminders that both the summer storm season and fall tropical weather still put this corner of Miami-Dade at risk.
