Fort Pierce, the seat of St. Lucie County on Florida's Treasure Coast, draws its tornadoes less from springtime supercells than from the summer thunderstorms and fall tropical weather typical of the Atlantic coast, and its history reflects that rhythm.
An F3 tornado struck on September 18, 1954, killing two people and injuring two more along a short, narrow path. On April 15, 1958, another F3 tracked 14.8 miles through the area, injuring 20 people and causing $275,000 in property damage. Later decades brought weaker but still disruptive storms, among them an F2 on February 2, 1983 that injured one person along a two-mile path, and EF1 tornadoes that touched down on May 17, 2016.
October 9, 2024 brought a violent day of tornadoes to the region. An EF3 that day tore a 21.24-mile track up to 500 yards wide, killing six people and causing $514 million in property damage. The same day, an EF2 traveled 65.49 miles and caused $16.5 million in damage, another EF2 destroyed $11 million worth of property along a 5.71-mile path, and EF1 and EF0 tornadoes touched down nearby as well. The autumn timing fit a pattern seen before in the EF0 tornadoes of October 17, 2022 and October 19, 2019, when fall weather, not spring storms, stirred the Treasure Coast.
