Florida Ridge sits in Indian River County on Florida's Atlantic coast, just south of Vero Beach, where tornadoes tend to arrive with the warm season — spun up by sea-breeze thunderstorms in early summer and by tropical systems in late summer and fall. That tropical connection turned violent on October 9, 2024, when an EF3 tornado tore a 21.24-mile path up to 500 yards wide through the area, killing six people and causing $514 million in property damage. The same day, an EF2 tracked 65.49 miles across the region and did $16.5 million in damage, while additional EF1 tornadoes touched down nearby.
Earlier generations weathered destructive storms of their own. An F3 tornado on April 15, 1958 traveled 14.8 miles and injured 20 people, and another F3 on September 18, 1954 killed two. On November 15, 1994, an F2 struck the area, killing one person, injuring 40, and causing $27.5 million in damage.
