Fleming Island lies along the west bank of the St. Johns River in Clay County, Florida, just south of Jacksonville, and its tornado history runs through winter cold fronts and hurricane-season storms alike.

Some of the area's significant tornadoes have arrived in the cool season. On February 7, 1971, an F3 tornado carved a 13.1-mile path roughly 200 yards wide, and F2 tornadoes touched down the same day. On February 2, 1996, an F0 tornado killed one person along a 6.5-mile path, while an F2 tracked 6 miles through the area that same day.

Late spring and summer have brought damaging storms as well. F2 tornadoes struck on June 8, 1957, and on May 12, 1974, an F2 followed a 17.5-mile track and injured one person while a second F2 injured two people along a 4.3-mile path. A brief F0 on June 11, 2001 claimed one life.

The peak of hurricane season has left its mark too: August and September of 2004 saw repeated touchdowns around the island, among them an F2 on August 12, 2004. More recently, EF1 tornadoes struck on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020, EF1s touched down again on February 4, 2024, and an EF0 passed through on May 29, 2025.
