About Tornadoes in Flagami

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Flagami, the flat, canal-threaded district on Miami's west side in Miami-Dade County, sits where sea-breeze thunderstorms drifting off the Everglades and tropical systems arriving from either coast can both spin up tornadoes, and its history shows touchdowns in nearly every season.

The mid-century years brought two intense strikes. On April 10, 1956, an F3 tornado tracked 7.8 miles through the area, injuring 20 people and causing $2,750,000 in damage. Then on June 18, 1959, another F3 plowed a 12.7-mile path up to 333 yards wide, injuring 77 and again inflicting $2,750,000 in damage.

Damaging tornadoes have continued in more recent decades. On March 27, 2003, an F2 tornado ran 6 miles with a width reaching 600 yards, killing one person and injuring 14. On October 19, 2011, an EF2 caused $4,000,000 in property damage along a path of just 1.11 miles.

Cool-season fronts matter here too: an F2 on December 20, 1973 injured 9 people along a 7.6-mile track, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Activity persists into the present day, with tornadoes touching down on September 27, 2022, and an EF1 striking on October 9, 2024.
