Eustis sits in the lake country of central Florida's Lake County, and its tornado history carries a distinctly Floridian rhythm: brief, weak tornadoes spun up by summer thunderstorms, and intense ones driven by winter and early-spring frontal systems crossing the peninsula.
That winter pattern turned deadly on February 2, 2007, when an EF3 tornado tore a track more than 26 miles long and up to 450 yards wide through the area, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98 million in property damage; a second EF3 that same date killed 8 people and injured 10 along a 10.5-mile path. Late winter had brought violent tornadoes before: on February 23, 1998, one F3 killed 13 people and injured 36 along a 16-mile track, while another F3 the same day killed 3 and injured 70. An F2 on March 13, 1993 tracked 30 miles through the region, killing one person and injuring 60.
