Edgewater sits between the Mosquito Lagoon and the inland pine flatwoods of southeastern Volusia County, on Florida's Atlantic coast, and its tornado history splits along the calendar. In the humid summer months, sea-breeze storms and tropical systems have repeatedly spun up brief twisters near the city: an EF2 on August 18, 2020 carved a track more than four miles long and over 500 yards wide, injuring one person and causing $8,010,000 in property damage, and another EF2 struck on September 10, 2017.
The cool season has delivered violent, deadly storms. An F2 on January 8, 1978 injured 23 people along a 19.3-mile path, and on November 2, 1997 an F3 injured 32.
