East Lake-Orient Park lies in Hillsborough County just east of Tampa, and its tornado history reflects two distinct Florida patterns: brief, weak touchdowns spun up by summer sea-breeze thunderstorms, and more dangerous tornadoes embedded in organized fall and cool-season storm systems.
The area has seen genuinely violent weather. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado followed a 135.8-mile path, killing 11 people and injuring 530; another tornado that day, rated F2, tracked 123.3 miles. On May 4, 1978, an F3 killed three people and injured 94 along a 1.5-mile path. October 3, 1992 brought another F3, which killed three and injured 75 on a 2.6-mile path up to 500 yards wide, while an F2 the same day claimed one life.
Damaging tornadoes have continued into recent years. An EF2 on October 19, 2019 tracked 11.45 miles, reached 525 yards wide, and caused $10 million in property damage; an EF2 on December 16, 2020 ran 13.11 miles and did $16 million in damage; and another EF2 struck on October 12, 2023. Between such events, the warm-season pattern persists in short-lived tornadoes like the EF1 of June 25, 2025 and the EF0s of August 8 and September 25, 2025.
