The area's history includes truly violent storms. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado carved a 135.8-mile track through the region, killing 11 people, injuring 530, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On October 3, 1992, several tornadoes struck in a single day, including an F3 that killed 3 people and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path that spread to 500 yards wide, and an F2 that killed 1. Summer sea-breeze storms account for many of the area's brief, weaker tornadoes, while the destructive events of April 1966, October 1992, and December 2020 arrived with organized systems in the cooler months and spring.
