East Lake sits beside Lake Tarpon in northern Pinellas County, on Florida's Gulf coast, and tornadoes have crossed this corner of the Tampa Bay area in every season of the year.
The area's history includes truly violent storms. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado carved a 135.8-mile track through the region, killing 11 people, injuring 530, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On October 3, 1992, several tornadoes struck in a single day, including an F3 that killed 3 people and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path that spread to 500 yards wide, and an F2 that killed 1. Earlier, on May 4, 1978, an F3 killed 3 people and injured 94.
Recent years have stayed active. A swarm of EF0 and EF1 tornadoes touched down on March 31, 2011. On December 16, 2020, an EF2 tracked 13.11 miles and caused $16 million in damage, and another EF2 struck on October 12, 2023, one of several tornadoes that day. An EF1 touched down on June 25, 2025, followed by an EF0 on September 25, 2025.
Summer sea-breeze storms account for many of the area's brief, weaker tornadoes, while the destructive events of April 1966, October 1992, and December 2020 arrived with organized systems in the cooler months and spring.
