About Tornadoes in Dunedin

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Dunedin sits on Pinellas County's Gulf coast, facing St. Joseph Sound, and its tornado history divides along seasonal lines. Summer sea-breeze thunderstorms have spun up brief, narrow touchdowns here — and even these can turn deadly, as on August 12, 1976, when an F1 killed one person and injured 21 along a path just 0.3 miles long.

The area's long-tracked, dangerous tornadoes have instead arrived with spring and cool-season storm systems moving in off the Gulf. An F4 struck on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530 along a 135.8-mile track some 300 yards wide, while an F2 traveled 123.3 miles that same day. An F3 on May 4, 1978, killed three people and injured 94 over a path of just a mile and a half. On October 3, 1992, an F3 up to 500 yards wide killed three people and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path, and an F2 the same day claimed one more life.

The threat has not faded in recent years. An EF2 on December 16, 2020, carved a 13.11-mile path roughly 300 yards wide and caused $16 million in property damage, and another EF2 tracked 4.97 miles on October 12, 2023, amid a cluster of weaker touchdowns that day.
