Doral sits on the flat western edge of Miami-Dade County, where the Miami urban grid runs up against the Everglades. Tornadoes here typically arrive with the sea-breeze thunderstorms of the summer wet season or with tropical systems crossing South Florida, and many have been brief F0 or EF0 touchdowns. The area has also seen far more dangerous storms, often in the cooler months when strong fronts sweep down the peninsula.

An F3 tornado struck on June 18, 1959, injuring 77 people along a 12.7-mile path and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. Another F3, on April 10, 1956, injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile track. Cool-season examples include an F2 on February 19, 1968 that injured 21 people, an F2 on December 20, 1973 that injured 9, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 that tracked 21 miles. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 along a 6-mile path that spread up to 600 yards wide.
