About Tornadoes in Deltona

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Deltona spreads across the rolling terrain of southwest Volusia County, above the north shore of Lake Monroe on the St. Johns River between Orlando and Daytona Beach. Tornadoes reach the area in two very different moods: brief spin-ups amid summer and hurricane-season thunderstorms, and far more dangerous storms riding the squall lines of winter and early spring across central Florida.

The cool season has repeatedly turned deadly here. On February 23, 1998, an F3 tornado tore a 16-mile path through the area, killing 13 people and injuring 36, while a second F3 the same day ran 18 miles, killing 3 and injuring 70, alongside additional F2 touchdowns. On February 2, 2007, an EF3 carved a 26.03-mile track up to 450 yards wide, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98 million in property damage; an EF1 also touched down that day. Even Christmas Day of 2006 brought two F2 tornadoes, which injured 5 and 6 people.

Warm-season tornadoes are usually briefer, but not always minor: on August 18, 2020, an EF2 plowed 4.59 miles with a damage path 550 yards wide, injuring one person and causing $8,010,000 in damage. And more recently, on March 10, 2025, an EF2 tracked 4 miles on a 300-yard-wide path through the area, doing $3.9 million in property damage.
