About Tornadoes in DeLand

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Tornadoes in DeLand, the Volusia County seat set between the St. Johns River and central Florida's Atlantic coast, tend to arrive in two very different moods. The warm months bring brief, weak spin-ups out of sea-breeze and tropical-season storms — EF0 touchdowns like those of August 2, 2021 and August 21, 2024 — while the area's destructive tornadoes have repeatedly ridden in on cool-season fronts crossing the peninsula.

On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado carved a path more than 26 miles long and up to 450 yards wide through the area, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98 million in property damage. On February 23, 1998, an F3 tracked 16 miles overnight, killing 13 people and injuring 36, and an F2 on the same date killed one person along an 8-mile path. An F3 on November 2, 1997 injured 32 people, and even Christmas Day of 2006 produced a pair of F2 tornadoes, one injuring five people and the other six.

Recent years have kept the threat current. An EF2 on August 18, 2020 plowed a 4.59-mile path up to 550 yards wide, injuring one person and doing $8.01 million in damage, and an EF2 on March 10, 2025 cut a four-mile swath that caused $3.9 million in property damage.
