About Tornadoes in Deerfield Beach

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Deerfield Beach occupies a stretch of Broward County's Atlantic shoreline where tornadoes arrive by two distinct routes: squall lines riding winter and early-spring cold fronts across South Florida, and the tropical weather of late summer and fall.

The frontal season has produced serious tornadoes here. On April 10, 1956, an F3 tornado ran a 7.8-mile path up to 200 yards wide and injured 20 people. On March 2, 1980, another F3 crossed the area on a 7.8-mile track that spread to 500 yards, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. A February 23, 1965 F3 stayed down for 5.7 miles and injured six, while an F2 on February 3, 1998 tracked 21 miles through the region.

The tropical months have left marks of their own. An F2 on October 14, 1964 injured 22 people, and an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage along a path just over a mile long. On September 28, 2022, an EF2 traveled nearly seven miles and injured two people. Then on October 9, 2024, an EF3 tore across South Florida for 32.89 miles at widths up to 457 yards, injuring seven people and causing $81.45 million in damage as it moved through the region.
