About Tornadoes in DeBary

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

DeBary occupies the southwest corner of Volusia County, on the north bank of the St. Johns River along Central Florida's I-4 corridor, and its tornado history splits sharply by season: brief, weak touchdowns spun up by summer thunderstorms and tropical systems, and far more dangerous tornadoes riding strong cool-season fronts.

Some of the area's grimmest days have come in the depths of winter. On February 23, 1998, a family of tornadoes raked the region, including an F3 that killed 13 people along a 16-mile path and another F3 that injured 70. On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado carved a track more than 26 miles long and up to 450 yards wide, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98,000,000 in property damage. Earlier storms fit the same pattern: an F2 on January 8, 1978 injured 23 people along a 19.3-mile track, an F3 touched down on March 19, 1981, and an F2 on March 13, 1993 injured 60 as a powerful storm swept across the state.

Recent years have added new entries. On August 18, 2020, an EF2 plowed a 4.59-mile path up to 550 yards wide near the city, causing $8,010,000 in damage, and on March 10, 2025, another EF2 tracked 4 miles through the area, causing $3,900,000 in property damage.
