Daytona Beach occupies a stretch of Volusia County's Atlantic coastline where two distinct weather regimes can produce tornadoes: sea-breeze and tropical-season storms through the summer, and strong frontal systems crossing the Florida peninsula in winter and early spring.
The cool season has delivered severe blows to the area. On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado carved a 26.03-mile path up to 450 yards wide, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98,000,000 in damage. An F3 tornado on November 2, 1997 injured 32 people along a three-mile track about 400 yards across, and an F2 on February 23, 1998 killed one person and injured three others along an eight-mile path. On December 25, 2006, two F2 tornadoes moved through the area, injuring five and six people respectively.
Summer carries its own hazards here. On August 18, 2020, an EF2 tornado plowed a 4.59-mile path as wide as 550 yards, injuring one person and causing $8,010,000 in damage. Decades earlier, an F1 on May 8, 1979 injured six people along a 6.9-mile track, and F2 tornadoes touched down in August of 1968, 1971, and 1972. Tornado activity has continued in recent years, with EF1 touchdowns in December 2019 and January 2020 and another tornado as recently as September 18, 2025.
