Dania Beach lies on Broward County's Atlantic shore, where tornadoes tend to arrive in two moods: brief warm-season spin-ups born of sea-breeze collisions and tropical downpours, and more organized systems that sweep across the peninsula in late winter and early spring.
F3 tornadoes struck the area repeatedly in earlier decades. On April 10, 1956, an F3 injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile track, and on June 18, 1959, another F3 stayed on the ground for 12.7 miles and injured 77. On March 2, 1980, an F3 up to 500 yards wide crossed 7.8 miles of the area, leaving 1 person dead, 33 injured, and property damage assessed at $27,500,000. On March 27, 2003, an F2 that widened to 600 yards traveled 6 miles, killing 1 person and injuring 14.
Recent decades have produced damaging twisters as well. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 needed only a 1.11-mile path to inflict $4,000,000 in property damage, and late September 2022 brought tornadoes on consecutive days, including an EF2 on September 28 that ran 6.98 miles and injured 2 people. Quieter stretches still see brief touchdowns — EF0s and EF1s riding winter fronts, as in the flurry of February 16, 2016, or spinning up from summer storms, like the EF1s of September 10, 2017.
