About Tornadoes in Coral Terrace

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Coral Terrace sits on flat, densely built ground just west of Miami in central Miami-Dade County, where tornadoes arrive by two routes: quick, weak spin-ups from summer sea-breeze storms and tropical systems, and more organized twisters running ahead of cool-season fronts.

Those fronts have brought damaging tornadoes to the area. An F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21 people along a 5.7-mile path, and an F2 on December 20, 1973 injured nine while tracking 7.6 miles. An F2 on February 3, 1998 held together for 21 miles, and an F2 on March 27, 2003 killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile path that spread to 600 yards wide.

Intense tornadoes have also struck in spring and early summer. An F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile track, and an F3 on June 18, 1959 carved a 12.7-mile path, injuring 77 people and causing $2,750,000 in damage.

Many of the area's warm-season tornadoes have been weak and short-lived, but an F1 on May 12, 1997 injured 12 people along an 8-mile track. More recently, an EF1 touched down on September 27, 2022, EF0s were confirmed on February 18, 2024, and an EF1 followed on October 9, 2024.
