Coral Springs occupies the northwestern corner of Broward County, pressed between the Everglades levee and the dense suburbs of South Florida's Atlantic coastal plain. Its tornadoes arrive in two distinct seasons: the late-winter and spring months, when strong fronts sweep down the peninsula, and the summer-to-fall stretch dominated by tropical moisture.
The cool season has brought destructive storms. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. A generation earlier, on April 10, 1956, an F3 tracked 7.8 miles through the area and injured 20 people. February has produced long-track tornadoes as well, including an F2 on February 3, 1998 that stayed on the ground for 21 miles.
The tropical season writes the other half of the story. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 carved a 1.11-mile path and caused $4 million in damage, and an EF2 on September 28, 2022 ran 6.98 miles and injured two people. Then on October 9, 2024, an EF3 crossed the region on a 32.89-mile path as wide as 457 yards, injuring seven people and causing $81.45 million in property damage — proof that the heart of hurricane season remains a serious tornado threat for this corner of Broward County.
