Coral Gables sits along Biscayne Bay in Miami-Dade County, and its tornado history reflects South Florida's mix of sea-breeze thunderstorms, winter frontal passages, and tropical systems. Many of the tornadoes near the city have been quick, weak spin-ups, though stronger storms have crossed the area on several occasions.

An F3 tornado struck on June 18, 1959, tracking 12.7 miles on a path up to 333 yards wide, injuring 77 people and causing $2,750,000 in damage. A few years earlier, on April 10, 1956, another F3 ran 7.8 miles through the area and injured 20. Cool-season tornadoes have hit hard as well: an F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21 people along a 5.7-mile track, an F2 on December 20, 1973 injured 9, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 tracked 21 miles across the region. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 along a 6-mile path up to 600 yards wide, with weaker tornadoes touching down the same day.
