Coconut Grove fronts Biscayne Bay on Miami-Dade County's urban shoreline, and its tornado history carries a distinctly South Florida rhythm: quick, often weak twisters spun up by summer sea-breeze storms and passing tropical systems, alongside cool-season tornadoes that ride winter and spring fronts across the peninsula.
Several dates stand out. An F3 tornado struck on April 10, 1956, injuring 20 people and causing $2,750,000 in damage along a 7.8-mile path, and another F3 arrived on June 18, 1959, injuring 77 along a 12.7-mile track. On February 19, 1968, an F2 injured 21. An F1 crossed the Miami area on May 12, 1997, injuring 12 along an eight-mile path. The cool-season threat resurfaced on February 3, 1998, when an F2 tracked 21 miles, and again on March 27, 2003, when an F2 up to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14 over a six-mile path.
The pattern continues into the EF era: an EF1 touched down on September 10, 2017, another on September 27, 2022, and, as recently as October 9, 2024, an EF1 struck the area — a reminder that in this corner of Florida, tornado weather can arrive in any season.
