About Tornadoes in Coconut Creek

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Coconut Creek sits in Broward County, on southeast Florida's flat coastal plain between the Everglades and the Atlantic, and the tornadoes that have crossed this area have tended to arrive with two very different weather patterns: the squall lines of winter and early spring, and the tropical systems and sea-breeze storms of the warm season.

The cool season has produced violent tornadoes here. An F3 struck on March 2, 1980, killing one person, injuring 33, and carving a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide that caused $27.5 million in property damage. An earlier F3, on April 10, 1956, injured 20 people along its own 7.8-mile track. February has brought damaging twisters as well: an F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21 people along a 5.7-mile path, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 tracked 21 miles through the region.

Autumn carries its own risk in this corner of Florida. An F2 injured 22 people on October 14, 1964; an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage; and an EF2 on September 28, 2022 injured two people along a nearly seven-mile path. On October 9, 2024, an EF3 tore a 32.89-mile track up to 457 yards wide through the area, injuring seven and causing $81.45 million in damage.
