In summer the Gulf sea breeze drifts inland and meets boundaries left by earlier storms; where those airstreams collide, updrafts can begin to rotate. In winter the pattern flips, with cold fronts and squall lines sweeping off the warm Gulf beneath strong winds aloft.

On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado came ashore near Tampa Bay and stayed on the ground for 135.8 miles, killing 11 people and injuring 530 as it crossed the peninsula. An F3 on May 4, 1978 killed 3 people and injured 94 along a path only 1.5 miles long, and another F3 on October 3, 1992 killed 3 and injured 75. On December 16, 2020, an EF2 carved a 13.11-mile track through the area.
