About Tornadoes in Carrollwood Village

This overview was written August 10, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

West-central Florida owes its tornadoes less to classic Great Plains supercells than to sea-breeze collisions, landfalling tropical systems, and the energized winter jet stream that crosses the Gulf of Mexico, and the Tampa Bay suburbs around Carrollwood Village have felt each of these modes. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's database traces local activity back to a brief F2 near the community on July 22, 1951. An F4 carved a 135.8-mile track across the peninsula on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530, while a companion F2 traveled 123.3 miles that same day. May 4, 1978 brought an F3 that killed 3 people and injured 94 along a compact path. Another F3, fully 500 yards wide, killed 3 and injured 75 during the squall of October 3, 1992. In the EF-scale era, an EF2 on December 16, 2020 tracked 13.11 miles through the area, and a further EF2 followed on October 12, 2023.

The ingredients differ by season. Summer moisture from the Gulf and the Atlantic feeds daily sea-breeze boundaries that collide over the peninsula and spin up brief tornadoes. In autumn, rainbands from tropical cyclones passing across warm shelf waters can rotate as they move ashore. In winter and early spring, particularly during El Niño phases, a vigorous subtropical jet drives squall lines across the state — the setup behind several of the area's damaging days. The event list elsewhere on this page carries the full local chronology.
