Carol City sits on the flat urban plain of northern Miami-Dade County, near the Broward County line, and tornadoes have touched down around it in every season — quick spin-ups amid summer thunderstorms from June into September, and more organized storms arriving with winter and spring squall lines.
The cool-season events have repeatedly done real damage here. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado tore along a 7.8-mile track up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On March 27, 2003, an F2 that widened to 600 yards on its six-mile path killed one person and injured 14. Earlier decades brought similar late-winter blows: an F3 on February 23, 1965 injured six people along a 5.7-mile path, an F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Summer has produced dangerous tornadoes as well — an F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles through the area and injured 77 people.
In more recent years, an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage along a 1.11-mile track. February 16, 2016 and September 27, 2022 each saw multiple tornadoes in a single day, rated EF0 and EF1, and an EF0 touched down on January 6, 2024.
