Buenaventura Lakes sits in Osceola County, Central Florida, just northeast of Kissimmee amid the flat, lake-dotted terrain of the Kissimmee River basin. Tornadoes here follow two rhythms: brief, generally weak spin-ups during the summer thunderstorm season, and more dangerous storms in the cooler months, when strong fronts and powerful upper-level winds cross the peninsula.
That cool-season pattern has turned deadly. An F4 tornado struck on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530 along a 135.8-mile path, while an F2 tracked 123.3 miles the same day. On February 23, 1998, two F3 tornadoes tore across the region — one killed 25 people and injured 150 along a 28-mile path, and the other killed 3 and injured 70 over 18 miles.
