Boca Raton occupies a low coastal stretch of southern Palm Beach County, and its tornado history reflects the two engines of South Florida's severe weather: sharp fronts in winter and spring, and the tropical systems of late summer and fall.
The frontal season has produced damaging tornadoes. An F3 tornado on April 10, 1956 tore a 7.8-mile path up to 200 yards wide and injured 20 people. Another F3 struck on February 23, 1965, tracking 5.7 miles and injuring six. On March 2, 1980, an F3 carved a 7.8-mile, 500-yard-wide swath through the area, killing one person, injuring 33 and causing $27.5 million in property damage; a long-tracked F2 on March 17, 1983 stayed on the ground for 52.5 miles.
The tropical season leaves its own mark. Tornadoes touched down on both September 27 and 28, 2022, including an EF2 on September 28 that ran nearly seven miles and injured two people. And on October 9, 2024, an EF3 crossed the region on a 32.89-mile path up to 457 yards wide, injuring seven people and inflicting $81.45 million in damage — proof that this seaside corner of southeast Florida can still see intense, long-tracked tornadoes.
