Belle Glade sits in western Palm Beach County at the southeastern edge of Lake Okeechobee, in the flat sugarcane country of the Glades. Tornadoes here tend to arrive in two seasons: late spring, when sea-breeze storms fire over the interior, and the tropical months of early fall, when passing storm systems spin up tornadoes across the lakeshore farmland.
The area's history includes formidable events. An F3 tornado struck on October 19, 1958, killing one person and injuring 24 along a 20.2-mile path that caused $275,000 in damage. A decade later, on November 11, 1968, a narrow F2 stayed on the ground for 65.4 miles. Tornadoes have struck in midwinter as well: an F3 traveled 9.6 miles through the area on January 24, 1979, and an EF1 touched down on January 23, 2017.
