Bayshore Gardens sits in Manatee County on Florida's Gulf Coast, just south of Bradenton near Sarasota Bay. Many of the tornadoes near the community are brief, weak warm-season spin-ups born of sea-breeze collisions and passing tropical moisture, but the events that have done serious damage here have tended to arrive with cool-season storm systems.
On April 15, 1958, an F4 tornado struck the area, injuring 7 people along a compact path about 300 yards wide. An F2 that touched down on April 4, 1966 went on to track 123.3 miles. On January 24, 1979, an F3 carved a 7-mile path through the region, and on March 17, 1985, another F3 cut a 3-mile swath up to 400 yards wide, killing 2 people, injuring 45, and causing $27,500,000 in property damage.
That cool-season pattern held on January 17, 2016, when two EF2 tornadoes struck the area on the same date: one killed 2 people and injured 4 along a 9.2-mile track, while the other injured 2 and did $12,000,000 in damage along a shorter path roughly 350 yards wide. Tornado activity has continued in recent years, including an EF1 on March 16, 2022 and an EF0 on January 9, 2024 — both, again, outside the summer thunderstorm season.
