Windsor sits in the Connecticut River Valley of Hartford County, a lowland corridor between Hartford and the Massachusetts line that has taken repeated tornado hits across the decades.
On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado tore through the area on an 11.3-mile track that spread damage up to 1,400 yards wide, killing three people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. October has produced other touchdowns here as well, including an F1 on October 24, 1955 and an EF0 on October 2, 2018.
Summer storms have been just as consequential. An EF3 on June 1, 2011 stayed on the ground for 37.58 miles, its path reaching 880 yards across; it killed three people, injured 200, and did $227.6 million in damage. On May 24, 1962, an F3 ran 11.6 miles through the valley, killing one person and injuring 50. And on August 21, 1951, tornadoes struck twice: an F2 that traveled 43.9 miles and injured nine people, and a brief but intense F3 that injured eight.
