Bloomfield sits in Hartford County, in the lowlands of the Connecticut River Valley where the terrain climbs west toward Talcott Mountain, and the town's tornado history is longer and harsher than New England's mild reputation suggests.
On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado tore an 11.3-mile path up to 1,400 yards wide through the area, killing 3 people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. Years earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tracked 11.6 miles, killing 1 person and injuring 50. August 21, 1951 brought back-to-back strikes: an F2 that traveled 43.9 miles and injured 9 people, and an F3 the same day that injured 8.
